Training Division

Throughout 2011, the Training Division continued to fulfill the goals of its mission statement: “To provide quality legal education and professional development training programs for District Attorney prosecutors, paralegals, and support staff members.”

Led by Division Chief David A. Williams, a prosecutor with 30 years of experience and a statewide instructor for prosecutors and law enforcement, the Training Division successfully conducted trained about 3,700 people with more than 70 training programs.

Several of training programs were offered in office-wide live-stream video broadcasts that allowed employees to remotely complete training programs from the convenience of their office or workstation. Some live-stream program topics included Workplace Spanish, Diversity, Marsy’s Law, Career Development, and AB 109 (also known as the Criminal Justice Realignment Act).

Training Division programs offered in 2011 included integrated advocacy courses for prosecutors, such as New Deputy Training, Felony Trial Advocacy, and Sexual Assault Prosecution. The Training Division produced training for paralegals that included resource and investigative programs that included New Paralegal Training and Skip-tracing techniques.

In February and October, the Training Division supported all-day training events that addressed topics required for continuing legal education credits and other subjects relevant to public service. In some cases, these training programs allow for attendance by local deputy city attorneys and child support enforcement attorneys.

The San Diego District Attorney's Office continues to be a state and national model for law enforcement training. The Training Division will continue to partner with in-house training committees and devote themselves to the development and coordination of high-quality in-house training programs tailored to the diverse needs of the organization.
